Cineteca di Bologna
>> www.cinetecadibologna.it Cineteca di Bologna is a municipal institution with the primary mission of preserving and disseminating film heritage in as many forms and expressions as possible. It was born out of Bologna’s Cinema Commission in the 1960s around the simple idea of considering our cultural past as something alive, therefore something with a future. Since then, the idea of recovering and rediscovering our cinematic heritage has been behind all steps that were taken: investigating sources, gathering collections, developing a preservation and restoration awareness and know-how, training personnel in a then rather unknown field and building a network of relationships and exchanges.
In 1995, the city adminstration recognized the Cineteca di Bologna as an "autonomous city institution" with its own board, chairman and director. It has been a founding member of the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) and a permanent member of the Fédération Internationale des Archives du Film (FIAF) since 1989.
The Cineteca’s film collection consists of roughly 40,000 prints, covering the entire sweep of cinema history from the silent era to contemporary productions. Besides its obvious dedication to cinema, the library focuses on photography, graphic design, soundtracks, audiovisuals and comics, holding 38,000 volumes, 1,100 Italian and foreign magazines, 13,000 units of audio-visual material and 200,000 film posters. The paper and stills archive also constitutes a rather consistent section of our heritage, ranging from collections of organisations and institutions to film critics, actors, producers and directors such as Alessandro Blasetti, Marcello Mastroianni, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Charlie Chaplin.
