About EFGOne year after the official start of the EFG project in September 2008, the groundwork is laid for a successful establishment of the EFG web portal, which will eventually give access to some 700.000 digitised texts, images and films kept in European film archives. A major task of the first year's work was the building of the EFG database structure, which will allow collecting and harmonising heterogeneous data from the contributing archives and will form the backbone of the EFG web portal to be launched in summer 2010. Framework Agreement Between ACE and FIAPF for Voluntary Deposit of FilmsA breakthrough has been reached in the longstanding negotiations between ACE (Association des Cinémathèques Européennes) and FIAPF (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Film) on a framework agreement for voluntary deposit. In BriefBy May 11th 2009, EFG partner Istituto Luce, Europe's oldest public film company founded in 1924, has undergone a merger by incorporation into Cinecittà Holding (Rome), giving thus birth to the public company Cinecittà Luce S.p.A.
The Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankurt am Main, administered by the Deutsches Filminstitut - DIF e.V., will close its doors at the end of 2009 due to full-scale reconstructions. With only the historic facades remaining unchanged, the new Filmmuseum is expected to reopen in April 2011 with more exhibition space, a modernised cinema and an entirely new permanent exhibition.
Now available in the outcomes section on the EFG website is the essay
“On the History and Function of Film Archives” by Thomas Ballhausen, researcher at the Filmarchiv Austria.

About EFG Aim of the EFG project is to build a web portal with direct access to over 700.000 objects including films, photos, posters, drawings, sound and text material. The project started with an inaugural meeting on 21 September 2008 bringing together representatives from the 20 partner institutions, including 14 film archives and cinémathèques of the EFG consortium. Film Restoration Summer School / FIAF Summer School

What's new in EFG?With entering the second project year in September 2009, the focus in EFG shifted from the basic groundwork carried out in the first project year to actual development and implementation tasks in the second and third project year. Today, the contributions of partner archives and the development of the front-end of the web portal is in full swing. In briefOn the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Berlin International Film Festival, film producers worldwide, represented by FIAPF and European film archives, represented by ACE, signed a framework agreement setting out new arrangements for voluntary deposit of film and film materials in European archives. The new agreement replaces the model contract from 1971.

First Special Collection DVD Awarded at II Cinema Ritrovato
The National Film Archive (NFA) in Prague has recently released the first title of a DVD edition, presenting less famous or forgotten film works along with an extensive set of bonus archival material. The diligently compiled DVD featuring 'Marijka the Unfaithful', Vladislav Vanèura's courageous attempt of a realistic depiction of life in the remote region of Subcarpathian Ruthenia in the 1930s, was awarded as 'Best rediscovery of a forgotten film' at this year's Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival in Bologna.
