Kuvaus: Guide to walking in the shadows The birth and development of the porticoes of Bologna, beginning in the Middle Ages. Following a brief historical investigation into the origins of the porticoes and the urban architectural revolution brought about by their introduction, an analysis of the social impact they had, and continue to have, on the lives of the people of Bologna. In the words of the director: “The film explains why this city has so many porticoes: people usually say the porticoes were built to provide protection from sun and rain, and don’t make any attempt at further explanation. We considered these reasons to be insufficient. Using plans from municipal offices we measured the porticoes: their total length is 35 kilometres. We discovered that the real reason for their construction was student overcrowding, which began to take place around the year 1200. These students required lodgings. A very modern problem… Furthermore, during the same period, serfs were being liberated from the countryside, and they too crowded into the city”.
