The voice over emphasizes the continuity between young people's pacifist activism and the anti-fascist resistance.
This is one of the "classic" documentaries devoted to the problem of Southern Italy: it was shot in 1949 during the congress for the renaissence of the South. The first part dealswith the reports by several Union leaders and politicians( Terracini,Gullo,Alicata,Amendola,Mancini,Sereni,Di Vitorio,De Martino) as well as intellectuals and artists(Repaci, Guttuso, Tommaso Fiore, Taddei) in the towns of Crotone,Salerno,Bari,Matera. This is followed by a series of sequences on the reality of the cities and the countryside of the South-Matera,Naples,the lands of Calabria and Campania-characterized by poverty, underdevelopment, century old backwardness, all of this made much worse by the war.Next to it, the film shows data concerning the Southern industry, the distribution of lands, the percentage of lands which have been abandoned; and it emphasizes, through the struggles of workers in the factories and of peasants trying to occupy fallow lands, people's will to transform the South and bring about its renaissance. A political demonstration in Melissa, attended by leaders from all parts of Italy ends the film which should ben remembered as the most complete film enquiry on the South in the early post-war period.
