New EYE film museum opens its doors in Amsterdam

Tomorrow, on 5 April, the new EYE film museum will open its doors to the general public. Located on the north shore of the river IJ in Amsterdam, the new building houses four cinemas, an exhibition space of 1200 square meters, the basement with the digitised collections, an educational room, museum shop and restaurant-café.

EFG1914 - Film digitisation project on First World War launches

With EFG1914, a major European co-operation project enters a new phase: Within the last three years (2008-2011), The European Film Gateway became a frequently used web portal for finding films and film-related material from the film archives and cinémathèques of Europe. Now, the follow-up project EFG1914 was kicked off. It officially started on 15 February and will run for two years. 26 partners contribute to the project. It will digitize up to 650 hours of film from and about World War I, and make the digitized film collections available on the Internet through the European Film Gateway  and the European digital library Europeana (www.europeana.eu).

Europeana launches redesign

Europeana_LogoEuropeana.eu, Europe’s digital library, museum and archive, launched a redesign with new functionality. The new interface has more visual appeal and has been adapted for iPads and Android touchscreens, bringing all the benefits of touch to Europe’s online treasury.

International Symposium "Importing Asta Nielsen: Cinema-Going and the Making of the Star System in the Early 1910s"

Her name is inextricably connected with the advent of the long feature film and the introduction of the star system: Asta Nielsen. From 27 to 29 September, international film historians and researchers will discuss the various modes of distribution, exhibition, appropriation, and reception of the first female star to receive international attention. The conference is hosted by the Deutsches Filminstitut in Frankfurt/Germany and curated by Martin Loiperdinger (University of Trier).

“Digital cinema: What Does the Future Hold for Cinematheques?” - International Symposium at La Cinémathèque française

On 13 and 14 October, international film makers, technicians, producers, curators and historians will meet at La Cinémathèque française in Paris to discuss the radical transformation from analogue to digital and its effects on the founding missions of cinémathèques (to collect, conserve, restore and show).
