"Migrating Archives of Reality. Programming, Curating, and Appropriation of Non-fiction Film" is an online conference organised by the EU-funded international research project Victor-E - "Visual Culture of Trauma, Obliteration, and Reconstruction in Post WWII Europe" that will take place on 6/7 May 2021. Among other things, the conference will look at how non-fiction films as they increasingly appear in (but also often disappear again from) online archives, virtual exhibitions, social media, YouTube etc. can be easily appropriated by artists, fans, and memory communities, and how the push towards mass digitization and public access to historical materials offers new avenues for decanonization and decolonization as practices of digitization, online programming, digital curation, appropriation (including colorization of black and white archival footage), and sharing, open up new spaces and layers of meaning.
The European Film Gateway is an associated partner of the Victor-E project and will as such publish on its website a dedicated thematic collection of films from various European film archives in early summer 2020. In addition, a Virtual Exhibition on the project's research subject will be released in spring 2022.
